What can I do about a shoulder impingement?

Shoulder Impingement

What is a shoulder impingement and do you have one?

A shoulder impingement is a pinching of the shoulder joint capsule when you try to raise your arm overhead. It can be very painful and is a common diagnosis to patients with shoulder pain. To confirm a diagnosis however you would need to see a doctor.

How does this happen?

Injury to the shoulder from lifting or an impact are the most common causes. Poor posture and misuse of the shoulder overtime can also wear at the tendons and ligaments causing misalignment of the shoulder joint. Regardless of how it happened, this misalignment is what causes the pinching when you raise your arm.

What can be done at home to improve a shoulder impingement?

First ice for 20 minutes a day to reduce any inflammation you may have. Next do exercises that traction or gently pull on the shoulder. An example would be to hold a 5 or 10lb weight and let the arm hang down. While the arm is hanging, try moving the weight in small circles to move the shoulder joint.

What can the doctor do to help?

A chiropractor using adjustments can over time realign the shoulder joint. Once it is in proper position, the shoulder should move like normal in a pain free range of motion.
