What is a Muscle Spasm?
A muscle spasm is when a muscle tightens up involuntarily and causes pain and discomfort.
How does this happen?
Muscle spasms are actually the body's protection mechanism. They do not just happen for no reason. Once you have injured a joint or nerve the body wants to brace you against any movement that will further damage that joint or the nerve. So the body will select certain muscles and lock them down which limits movement. This spasm over time will begin to damage the muscle and cause muscle pain. You may notice you can not fully turn your head to one side and have lot of neck discomfort, this is a muscle spasm.
Will a massage just make it go away?
The massage will help with the muscle pain and release the muscle spasm. However unless you remove the initial cause for the muscle spasm it will return within a few days. The cause is typically a pinched nerve or joint.
How can chiropractic help with a muscle spasm?
Chiropractic helps by adjusting the joint that is the initial cause of the muscle spasm. Once the injury is healed, the muscle spasms will release on their own as they are no longer needed to restrict motion.
