What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the uneven or premature wear of a joint in relation to the joints around it. Over time this continues to wear down the joint further and further, causing more and more pain and dysfunction as the process progresses.
How does Osteoarthritis happen?
Osteoarthritis starts by uneven wear patterns caused by poor posture, poor body mechanics, injury or misalignments. In a short time period they will not be noticeable, however after 5 or more years they become more and more apparent until the problem must be addressed.
How can chiropractic help?
By properly aligning the joint we can stop the excessive wearing on the joint and the joint can begin to heal. By keeping the joint in alignment throughout the treatment plan your chiropractor can slow down and even reverse some of the wear in some cases.
Do I need surgery?
In very advanced cases where a patient has worn the joint away completely and is bone on bone, it is possible the patient may need surgery. In this case the chiropractor can refer you out for proper imaging and to the appropriate provider.
