What are sprains and strains?
Sprains and strains are types of soft tissue injury. They represent an elongating or tearing of the fibers of the connective tissue. Connective tissue in this case meaning muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
What is the difference between a sprain and a strain?
A strain is typically tearing of the muscle tissue from over exertion. Think of lifting a box that is too heavy and you strain a muscle in your back. A sprain is an over stretching of connective tissue. Think of stepping into a hole and rolling your ankle. You have over stretched one side of your ankle and now have an ankle sprain.
How does chiropractic help with sprains and strains?
When a sprain or strain happens you begin to lose stability at that joint. That instability makes it much harder to the soft tissue to shorten back to its original length. This leads to what is called a chronic sprain or an injury that never really heals. The chiropractor through gentle specific adjustments maintains proper alignment of the joint allowing the soft tissue to shorten back to its original length. In many cases the chiropractor will give you some exercises and therapies to do at home that will benefit the healing process and help get you back to 100%.
How long do sprains and strains take to heal?
Healing to 100% even with treatment can take up to 6 months in some cases. However not receiving treatments or not completing your treatment plans leads to further damage and can result in a lifelong injury. Most people know someone who sprained their ankle 20 years ago and never quite recovered.
