What is tendonitis?
Tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon through overuse and improper use. Common examples include tennis elbow and golfers elbow but can also be seen in the wrist, shoulder, hips, knees, and ankles as well.
How does tendonitis develop?
Tendonitis often begins with limited range of motion in one joint which then causes excess or improper stress on the connecting joint. Lets use tennis elbow as an example. This often starts with a limited shoulder range of motion. Then because the player is trying to get more power, the elbow begins to take on the excess stress that the shoulder is not properly handling. This with time and use begins to tear the tendons in the elbow which leads to an elbow tendonitis. Since this is very commonly seen in tennis players it took the common name of tennis elbow.
How can tendonitis be treated?
Through a combination of therapies, exercises, and gentle specific chiropractic adjustments, your chiropractor can both manage the symptoms and allow the tendonitis to begin healing. Treating both the site of injury and the original cause (which might actually be the shoulder in the case of tennis elbow) leads to decreased pain, better function, and avoids chronic injuries you must deal with year after year. Typically over a period of 6-12 weeks the patient can begin slowly working back into their daily regimen of exercise.
