Scoliosis is the term for any side ways or lateral curves in the spine. The spine is S shaped when looking from the side but should be a straight line when looking from the front or behind. This irregular curve puts more pressure on joints and nerves on one side of the curve and creates more strain for muscles on the opposite side of the curve.
How do I know if I have scoliosis?
Typically around 12-18 years of age is when it becomes noticeable. It is hereditary and more often is in the female genetic line but can also be seen in males. A Doctor of Chiropractic can examine you as well as refer for X-rays to see the curvature.
How serious is scoliosis?
In most cases it is more about symptom management and making sure the joints stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Someone with scoliosis needs more spinal care than someone who does not have scoliosis due to the increased stress on the spine. Some cases however can become so severe they create stress on internal organs and need full spinal surgery.
How can Chiropractic help?
